From Chasing Weight Loss to Building True Health
From Chasing Weight Loss to Building True Health

For Susan Danson, fitness has never been a phase. It has always been part of who she is.

At 56 years old, Susan lives in Wrentham, Massachusetts, about 30 miles outside of Boston. She and her husband have built a life centered around health, movement, and family. Together, they raised three athletic sons, now 18, 20, and 22, and staying active has always been woven into the rhythm of their home. In fact, Susan and her husband first met while training for marathons years ago.

From high school athletics to marathons, 5Ks with her kids, and now strength training, Susan has spent decades prioritizing fitness. Even through the busiest seasons of life, she found a way to keep showing up.

“It’s just part of who we are.”

Shifting Focus In New Seasons

Like many women, Susan spent years with fitness goals centered around the scale.

For a long time, that meant cardio. Running, spin classes, HIIT classes, and workouts built around sweating hard and keeping her heart rate up. But over the last couple of years, her perspective began to change.

As Susan moved through perimenopause and menopause, she noticed that the old approach no longer worked the same way. What once felt straightforward became a constant battle. Slowly, her goals shifted away from simply losing weight toward something deeper.

“It went from being about weight to being about health.”

That change led her into strength training. Encouraged by her husband and influenced by health and fitness podcasts she had been listening to, Susan began reducing cardio and focusing more intentionally on lifting. Over time, she transitioned almost fully into strength training, following structured programming and pushing herself in a whole new way.

What started as a change in workouts became a much bigger transformation in mindset.

Beginning With A Baseline

As Susan learned more about women’s health, hormones, bone density, and body composition, she realized she needed real data about what was happening inside her body.

Hearing experts discuss the importance of getting ahead of bone health, especially for women in their 40s and 50s struck a chord. Rather than waiting until later in life to see where things stood, Susan wanted a baseline now, while there was still time to make meaningful changes.

So in January 2025, after starting hormone replacement therapy and becoming more intentional with her strength training, she scheduled a DEXA Scan at Human Powered Health.

It all started with a simple Google search.

Susan was willing to drive 45 minutes because she wanted answers and expertise she could trust.

“I wanted to know where I was at.”

Going Beyond The Numbers

Susan’s first DEXA Scan gave her exactly what she had hoped for: clarity.

It also gave her information she did not necessarily want to hear.

Her scan showed slight osteopenia in her lower spine. For someone already lifting heavy and taking her health seriously, that result was frustrating. But it also gave her something even more valuable than reassurance. It gave her direction.

Without that information, Susan could have kept training the same way, assuming everything was fine. Instead, she left with a clearer understanding of where she needed to focus.

“Knowledge is power, information is power.”

That mindset shaped the way she approached the year ahead. Susan was not interested in simply losing weight. She wanted to protect her muscles, strengthen her body, and support her long-term health.

After gaining about 20 pounds during a busy season of life filled with football weekends and tailgates, Susan made it her goal in 2025 to lose the weight while preserving as much muscle as possible. That meant continuing to lift heavy, prioritizing protein, and focusing on body composition instead of just the number on the scale.

“I don’t want to focus on just what the scale says anymore.”

Trending In The Right Direction

When Susan returned for her next DEXA Scan in January 2026, she already knew she had made progress. The scale had changed. Her clothes fit differently. She felt stronger.

But the scan confirmed something even better.

She had lost the weight she wanted to lose while increasing her lean mass percentage and improving her overall body composition. The results were so strong that Susan could hardly believe them at first.

“I still couldn’t believe the results.”

But the numbers were clear.

The data reflected what happens when discipline, intentionality, and smart training come together over time. Susan had not just lost weight. She had improved the quality of that weight loss by maintaining muscle and reducing body fat.

For her, that was the real win.

As she continues forward, Susan’s goals have become even more specific. She wants to maintain her healthy body composition while putting even more focus on bone density, especially in her hips and spine, so she can stay strong and active for the long haul.

Proactive Health For The Long Run

Susan describes her experience at Human Powered Health with a few simple words: professional, knowledgeable, friendly, experienced, and willing to educate.

That combination mattered.

For Susan, testing wasn’t about vanity or chasing perfection. It was about understanding her body well enough to train with purpose and make smarter decisions for her future.

Now, she encourages other women, especially women in their 40s and 50s to do the same.

“I really do encourage women in their 40s and 50s to visit Human Powered Health to get a baseline.”

Because as Susan knows firsthand, the earlier you understand where you stand, the more opportunity you have to change where you are headed.

Her journey is a reminder that true progress is not always about doing more. Sometimes it is about getting the right information, adjusting your focus, and committing to long-term health with wisdom and consistency.

Wherever Susan’s journey takes her next, we will be cheering her on.

We are inspired by her discipline, encouraged by her mindset, and grateful to be part of her story as she continues building strength for the years ahead.
