White third in Colorado Classic finale

22 year old sprints to podium on stage 4 in Denver

Rally UHC Cycling’s Emma White sprinted to third place in the Colorado Classic finale in downtown Denver on Sunday. With two riders staying away including race leader Chloé Dygert Owen, White won the field sprint for third to earn the team’s first podium of the UCI four-stage race. Climber Kristabel Doebel-Hickok finished fifth on General Classification after scoring top 10 finishes in Steamboat Springs and Avon.

Hot on the heels of the Women’s Tour of Scotland where White and her teammates were faced with extreme cold and wet conditions, the Colorado Classic hit them with temperatures soaring into the 90’s and thin air that made it feel like they were breathing through a straw.

“I felt a huge sense of relief after finishing the week on the podium,” said White. “It was a really tough week for me, mentally and physically, so to overcome that and prove to myself I had something left was important.

For the first time in the history of the Colorado Classic, a standalone women’s format was utilized, with an increase in race days, an upgrade to UCI certification, and prize purses that surpassed the previous men’s edition.

“All of the changes, including the daily live-stream, were a huge step in promoting women’s racing in North America,” said 2017 overall champion Sara Poidevin. “I hope the Colorado Classic can serve as an example for other races seeking sustainability and exciting racing.”

With half the team heading to France for the Women’s WorldTour event GP de Plouay on August 31st, White shifts her focus to the track with USA Cycling and her bid for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

“I jump right into the track program to prep for the Pan Am Championships in Bolivia next week,” said White. “Then I head home to start my final semester at Union College. It’s a busy time but I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
