Team’s world tour enters the UK

Race Preview: Prudential RideLondon Classique

Rally Cycling embarks on the second leg of their European campaign at the Prudential RideLondon Classique on July 28th. This flat, five-kilometer circuit in downtown London has attracted the World Tour’s top sprinters and some of the biggest crowds this side of the Tour de France. The course includes passages of Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, and Trafalgar Square for a total of 65 km of gorgeous urban racing.

London is expecting rain on Saturday, which will make the multiple roundabouts and u-turns spread across the course all the more treacherous. Technical skill on the bike will be paramount for success. Rally Cycling will start Kelly Catlin, Heidi Franz, Kirsti Lay*, Katherine Maine, and Emma White.

After a successful debut for the team at Belgium’s BeNe Ladies Tour last week, podium finisher Emma White is looking to reach the top step in London.

“I’m feeling strong and after a couple of close finishes in Belgium, I have high hopes for more,” said White. “We had a tough BeNe race due to a number of crashes, but it showed us what it takes to be successful over here.”

The RideLondon Classique’s history and course profile lend itself to a bunch sprint at the end of the day, and White can’t wait.

“I raced RideLondon two years ago with the team and with it being a high-paced, technical race, it’s difficult for any small groups to get away,” said White. “It will likely favor sprinters as it has in the past, so we like our chances!”

Following the race, the women will return to the States for the Colorado Classic, August 16 – 19.

*Injury update: Kirsti Lay suffered a fractured scaphoid bone in her right wrist during the BeNe Ladies Tour last week. Her participation in London will be a game-time decision. Out of precaution, Sara Bergen has been ruled out with mild concussion symptoms stemming from a crash last week.
