Bergen finishes third in stage two of Redlands Classic

Team places three in the top ten

Rally Cycling’s Sara Bergen finished third on the queen stage of the Redlands Bicycle Classic on Thursday. The Canadian was part of the day-long breakaway that got caught in the final few km of the day’s finishing climb. Bergen took the lead in the climber’s competition as a result of her time in the breakaway and high stage finish. Sara Poidevin and Kirsti Lay came out of the chasing field behind for fifth and seventh on the stage.

With the opening stage time trial in Big Bear being canceled due to snow, the result of stage two has set the pecking order for the week. Friday’s stage three sends the riders to Highland, CA where they will tackle 14 laps of a three-mile circuit.

Sara Bergen on making the move and sticking it

“The whole team was racing aggressive and K-Maine put a huge dig on lap one of the circuit before the QOM and that created the original separation that had about 30 seconds. I bridged to the move and I put my head down for QOM points and time bonuses.

“When Katie Hall caught us from the field I was just able to jump on. I looked back and saw Poido making up time fast before Katie attacked hard with 500 meters to go. I couldn’t match her acceleration and it was just head down to try and minimize the time gap.

“I’m feeling great. We have some strong cards to play the rest of the week. With Poidevin and Kirsti both within 1:30 on GC we really have some cards to play. These stages are amazingly fun to race and I am so stoked to go at it tomorrow with the whole team!”
